Civil War Reenactment

A grant written by fifth grade teacher Mrs. Winner provided a full day of hands on learning about the Civil War. In the morning, students were able to try on Civil War clothing, listen to stories, learn about equipment, and be trained for a reenactment they did in the afternoon. The video below shows lots of pictures!

NPAECT STEAM Showcase

A friend of mine, Ann Noonen, hosted a STEAM Showcase for NPAECT during the RoboBot Competition at Meadville High School on April 2nd. Nicole Hill, Northwestern director of NPAECT, first made me aware of the showcase and encouraged me to bring some students. Shout out to Nicole! This was one of the most amazing experiences and opportunities the Futuristic Foxes have ever been afforded.
The day began at East Elementary at 8:15 am where three sets of parents with SUV's, I, and my husband met to arrange transportation for sixteen students (three students were to meet us at the event.) We loaded cars with students and supplies and drove the fifty minutes to Meadville. We were given five tables to set up our display and we had no problem filling them. We also had access to a large empty hallway where the students had a great time demonstrating how our robots worked and allowing others the opportunity to use them, too.

Ron Myers, a teacher in our district, got a grant to buy the supplies to create this amazing virtual reality sandbox. Below are pictures of pure white sand that are made to look like a topography map or a landform relief map using a projector and a first release Xbox! So cool! Watch the videos below to listen to Ron turn these amazing pictures into science lessons.

The Alex and Hayden Show

Over two years ago, a group of fifth graders who called themselves the Fantastic Ferrets, created a talk show about autism. The cohosts of the show were Alex and Hayden. Their show was produced to help children and others with autism. Alex and Hayden give coping strategies and tips for dealing with frustration. They explain what autism is to others who may not understand it, and they tell about famous people who had autism.

The show spread far and wide, and a man who is the head of the Autism Program for the whole state of Illinois found out about Greenville's two famous boys. He invited Mrs. Abernethy, the two boys, and Hayden's mom to Springfield, Illinois to speak at the "Targeting Autism" conference in front of hundreds of librarians. Below is a video of the presentation. It is one hour long, so you may not want to watch it all at once.

Did you know that we have been raising trout in our classroom? We are, and they are doing fabulous!!!! We received eggs from the PA Game and Fish Commission at the beginning of November. They hatched in December and we have been raising them ever since.

If you want to see more updates and more information about our trout, check out our Science Blog. Click on this link to learn more about the Trout in the Classroom program.
